New developments in the processing of metallic alloys for achieving exceptional superplastic properties

Abstract. The process of superplasticity has a long history dating back to the early experiments Pearson conducted in U.K. 1934. Since that time, become increasing importance because recognition superplastic forming provides simple procedure for processing complex and curved parts use wide range industrial applications. fundamental requirement flow is small grain size typically smaller than ~10 µm. These fine grains were achieved traditionally through appropriate thermo-mechanical which provided developing microstructures having sizes order few micrometers. Over last two decades procedures have been further developed techniques based on application severe plastic deformation (SPD) where it possible achieve ultrafine-grained materials with submicrometer or even nanometer range. Early SPD using processes equal-channel angular pressing high-pressure torsion but more recently new improved technique was known as tube shearing (t-HPS). Experiments show t-HPS capability producing exceptional elongations with, example, an elongation ~2320% Bi-Sn alloy when tested at strain rate 10-4 s-1 room temperature. This report examines these recent developments emphasis potential improving capabilities metallic alloys.
